Sustainable Development Goals

Working Towards a Healthier World, One Supply at a Time

In 2015, 193 world leaders came together to create a shared blueprint for peace, prosperity, and the protection of our planet — the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At Medical Pantry, our mission aligns closely with this vision. We are deeply invested in addressing healthcare’s impact on climate change and reducing global health inequalities — and we’re taking action every day.

Our Sustainability Commitment

Sustainability is not an afterthought — it’s part of the core ethos of Medical Pantry. We’ve developed a strategic approach to support key Sustainability Development Goals by embedding sustainable practices into everything we do. From reducing waste to reshaping healthcare distribution, our initiatives are designed to make a lasting impact. We have identified four key goals from the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals that align closest with Medical Pantry’s mission.

Goal: Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Welbeing for All ages

Why: Over 50% of the global population lacks access to essential healthcare, while high-income countries discard huge quantities of usable medical supplies. Medical Pantry bridges this gap by rescuing surplus medical items and delivering them to under-resourced communities, both locally and internationally. This not only provides life-saving care but also alleviates pressure on supply chains during crises and recovery efforts.

Goal: To Reduce inequalities within and among countries

Why: Healthcare should never be a privilege. We prioritise the redistribution of medical supplies to marginalised and remote communities who are disproportionately affected by health disparities. By partnering with grassroots organisations, we ensure our support reaches those who need it most — closing the gap in health outcomes and access.

Goal: To ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Why: Healthcare’s reliance on single-use items poses a serious environmental challenge. We’re combatting this through circular economy principles, extending the life of medical products and pioneering projects that transform clean plastic waste into new resources. By promoting reuse, we reduce the demand for unnecessary manufacturing and encourage smarter, more efficient consumption.

Goal: Taking urgent action to tackle climate change and it’s impacts

Why: Healthcare contributes to around 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. We’re taking steps to change that. Since 2021, we’ve diverted 15,000 tonnes of medical supplies from landfill — equivalent to $200 million in value. Our projects explore innovations like converting clean plastics into 3D printing filament, promoting low-waste healthcare models and empowering donors to manage resources responsibly.

Looking Ahead

“Waste is a significant issue within the health sector and is a visible reminder of the greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption within the health system supply chain.”
— Victorian State, Department of Health
As the healthcare sector grapples with rising waste and climate impact, we remain committed to leading the way. The path forward demands bold action, collaboration, and a vision for healthcare that respects both people and the planet.
